Our last match this term took us to Pennthorpe school, on one of the hottest days this year. After a long bus ride the boys arrived a little under the weather. We won the toss and chose to bowl first and the lads did seem to wake up from the heat induced apathy that had made our warm up seem more like a yawning contest.
We started well with Mayhew and Gache bowling a fairly tight line and it wasn’t long before the first wicket fell with Mayhew
taking the first scalp. Pennthorpe then continued steadily for a while and were solid with two of their boys making most of the runs. We did manage to slow them down some with irregular wicket intervals. In the end Gache and Penlington managed to grab a wicket each as well as Gache having a smashing spell of fielding with a direct hit to liven things up in the field! Our extra’s let us down which was a shame as we had improved on that in our last game. Pennthorpe finished on 115.
Our batting innings was definitely an improvement to the last game that we played and we managed to bat through 18 of the 20 overs. We are still struggling to score the runs as many of the boys are short of strokes or not confident enough at this stage to try new things learnt in a game. In the end it was Pennthorpe who came out on top, however not a bad day for the lads.
Well done on the season boys. We have worked hard on many aspects of the game and there has definitely been substantial improvement in different areas. We are progressing each practice and match which is all that I can ask for. Don’t stop practicing all together until next season please as we will then be back to square one. I wish you all well on a successful football season. DH
