2nd XI Cricket v Shoreham College – April 2017

1st May 2017

The 2nd team’s cricket season got under way on Wednesday and ended in a disappointing defeat to Shoreham College. Copthorne won the toss and captain Freddie decided to field first. The first over went really well with Kye picking up 2 wickets. It took a while for the next wicket to follow as the Shoreham batsmen dug in. Eventually the breakthrough was made by Kye once again. Wickets fell at regular intervals with Karan taking 2 wickets in 2 balls and ending up with a total of 4 wickets for his afternoon’s work.

Ben took a great catch off Charlie’s bowling whilst Kye took an excellent run out opportunity. One thing stopped this performance from being an excellent one, the extras column. Byes, wides and no balls cost Copthorne 2 runs a time and this mounted up throughout the Shoreham innings. In fact, Shoreham only scored a total of 18 off the bat out of their total of 78. This would eventually cost us the game.

The team’s batting performance left little to be desired unfortunately with 8 out of 11 batsmen ending their innings with 0 runs. This has to improve if the team wants any chance of winning games. One of the Shoreham bowlers managed a hat trick merely by just bowling the bowl straight. We must learn to defend good balls and not try and attempt to slog them out of the ground. Freddie scored a respectable 17 before being bowled with Ben and Kye the only other run scorers in a 28 run defeat.

Lots to work on over the coming weeks. Onwards and upwards.
