2nd XI Cricket v Windlesham – Summer 2017

14th May 2017

A close game was fought out between two evenly matched sides on Wednesday afternoon in the bright sunshine at Copthorne. Windlesham won the toss and decided that they would bat first. Things started well with an early catch off Karan’s bowling but it was to take a little while to make another breakthrough as the Windlesham batsmen put on some decent runs.

Unfortunately it wasn’t the best day in the field for Copthorne as a number of catches were put down and fielding mistakes cost valuable runs that in the end would come back to haunt Copthorne. A run out chance was taken with an excellent pick up and throw from Will. Sam had his first bowl of the season and it proved to be fruitful as he picked up three wickets during his 4 over spell and was pick of the bowlers. Karan picked up his second wicket in his final over before a crazy final over of the innings ensued.

With only one ball left to be bowled, Kye managed to bowl three wides but each ball, which had to be re-bowled, lead to a run out. This meant a team hat trick at the cost of three extra runs. Unfortunately once again the extras column top scored by a long way and if the boys want to win matches this needs to be vastly improved. Windlesham ended their innings on 113-9.

The Copthorne innings didn’t get off to the best start with a loss of a wicket in the first over. Panic then seemed to take over with some crazy runs being taken. This in turn lead to wickets falling very cheaply and for a while it looked as if the final total was going to be way short. Zevon and Karan steadied the ship somewhat as Windlesham’s extras column also began to add up,
pushing Copthorne closer to their victory total. Wickets though seemed to fall at the wrong time and in fairly cheap fashion once again. Zevon (10) and Sam (11) played nicely with some great shots to the boundary. With the total seemingly out of reach Dan came in and played really well for his 16, hitting the ball all over the place and causing some panic within the Windlesham ranks.

Unfortunately it wasn’t to be enough and Copthorne fell 20 runs short on 94-9. It was a disappointing result but I’m sure that next week the boys can pick themselves up again and get another win.
