2nd XII Rugby v Shoreham College

17th January 2016

Lost 10-17

The Copthorne 2nd team started enthusiastically against a well organised Shoreham College side and spent the first few minutes camped on their line. Drives from Kye Nick K, Kieron E and others all came up short and then, completely against the run of play, the ball popped  the arms of one of the Shoreham players who promptly ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts. The boys were a little stunned by this and took a little time regain their composure. A little too much kicking from hand ensued which resulted in valuable possession being given away, but just before half time the ball was passed down the line from a scrum and Dan W picked a great line through the opposing defence to score in the corner. Nemo could not quite convert a difficult kick.

The second half started with the score at 5-7 and soon afterwards, Shoreham’s captain took the ball at pace and wrong-footed our defensive line to score in  corner. Time and time again excellent driving play by Toby C, in particular, was met with an aggressive line of defence. Tom W, Josh V and Nemo also made good runs but were unable to cross the line until Nick picked up a loose ball and managed to squeeze in for another try right in the corner. Nemo hit the conversion sweetly from wide out but it just drifted past the left hand post. This left the score at 10-17. Chances followed for both sides but that is how the match finished. I was very pleased with the commitment shown by all, particularly Kieron, Kye and Nicholas H for playing on despite picking up knocks in the course of the game. They may have lost their unbeaten record, but it was a strong performance.

Man of the match for excellent driving play must go to Toby. HS
