The first 3rd team fixture of the season was an away Twenty20 match against Brambletye. Due to illness and injury we had to call upon 3 Year 6 boys who more than willingly answered the call to play up an age group.
Captain, Joe Gache, won the toss and put the hosts into bat first. They batted throughout the 20 overs but were limited to 88 runs for 3 wickets; 1 caught and bowled by Dan Gooda, a clean bowl from Elliott Young and a “hit stumps” from another Young bowl. With no fewer than 6 dropped catches in the field we were a little frustrated and knew that the final total of runs should have been significantly less. That said, the field worked extremely hard, communicated well and kept the encouraging talk going throughout.
We started very well with the bat, making good strides towards the required total before some good bowling opened the floodgates for a barrage of tumbling wickets. We found ourselves at a respectable 43 for 3, however we then lost 4 more wickets for a further 15 run gain. With 5 overs remaining and over 30 runs needed Jack Marsh, our only Year 8 representative, entered the crease with a mindset of “I am not going out!” With the help from 3 batting partners and a collection of defensive shots we batted through the 20 overs to record a fantastic draw, which at one point looked highly unlikely.
This was a very promising start to the season for the 3rds and one which they can all take pride from and build upon. Well done to all 11 boys.
