Four of Copthorne’s finest athletes made the trip to Birmingham to test themselves against the best that the UK has to offer. The sheer size of Alexander Stadium is enough to put the most seasoned athlete under extra pressure let alone 3 debutants.
Qualifying for this competition is a huge achievement that should not be underestimated and the quality of the athletes on show still amazes me.
All four of our pupils had strong parental support and as a Copthorne community we thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Under 13 Boys 70m Hurdles – Daniel P – 12.72s – Heats 5th Place
Under 13 Boys Discus – Zac R – 26.19m – Final 5th Place
Under 12 Boys Shot Put – Zac C – 8.87m – Final 4th Place
Under 12 Girls 800m – Ella C – 2.47.62 – Graded Final 5th Place /14th Overall (New School Record and New PB)
Well done to all of the pupils and a special mention to Ella D who could not compete at the finals due to prior arrangements. Looking at the results for the Under 12 Girls Shot Put, she may well have took a medal home with her!
On my drive home I heard a quote on the radio by none other than Bear Grylls who said “Light can only shine through the cracks of a broken vessel”. For me this sums up athletics and sport as a whole. We must use bad experiences and failed performances as a learning process, work hard to fix the problems and try again for a positive result. If you under performed in practice, on Sports day, at the County Championships or even at the National finals, please re-read the quote and make a difference. MA
