Last Friday gave our runners an opportunity to take to the fields and get in some vital competitive racing before heading off to the Nationals in a couple of weeks time. As always, I selected a young team to compete in what is billed as a Year 8 event.
Girls team – Abigail (Y8), Emily (Y7), Gabi (Y6), Katie, Biba and Harley (Y5)
Boys team – Austin, Ben and Jacob (Y8), Alastair (Y7), Sam (Y6) and Alexander (Y4)
The Ardingly relays is a 1.3km course where each of the runners complete a full lap before tagging the next runner. Once all 6 runners have finished their lap the team who completed the course in the quickest time is crowned the winner.
Given the age of our team it was always going to be a tough ask to threaten the top spots but I can not fault the effort shown and the experience gained will be vital in future races. Both of our teams came home in 5th place behind Ardingly, Great Walstead, Cranleigh and Windlesham but managed to hold off the competition from Worth and Cumnor House. As the smallest school in the competition we can take great pride in our performance and I am looking forward to tackling the event again next year when our runners are a year older.
I awarded our runners of the day medals to Biba, who managed to overtake and stretch our lead from Cumnor, and Sam for a wonderful final lap. Well done to all 12 runners; don’t forget to collect your double effort stars!
