Boys 1st XI v Ardingly (away – astroturf) – lost 0-7

The boys took to the pitch determined to avenge the 2nd XI’s defeat and throughout the game displayed a never-say-die attitude that did them enormous credit.

The truth is that taking on a school with twice as many boys to choose from in years 7 and 8, a 100% focus on hockey from February and their own astroturf pitch is always going to be the proverbial ‘tough task’!  And so it proved today.  Ardingly’s knowledge of the game, drilled into them from year 3, allied to their skills and technical ability proved too much for Copthorne’s finest to handle, despite some heroic goalkeeping from Sam & Morgan and magnificent defending from Harry in particular, supported by Joe, Oliver and Nils.  Ed, Oscar and Freddie ran their socks off in midfield, working back to shore up our defence and then sprinting forward to support Jamie, Chris and Andy up front whenever we managed to break out of our half.

It was difficult to choose a player-of-the-match when everyone put in such a great effort, but Harry just edged it with his outstanding last-ditch defending which got us out of a few tough corners today! MM
