So the short outdoor hockey campaign comes to an end and, despite no little endeavour, the record makes for poor reading: played 4, lost 4, scored 0, conceded 19.
In truth, we only managed two shots at goal during the four matches.
The boys were determined to do well in today’s derby against grass-pitch rivals, Cottesmore. Yet despite winning the toss and opting to start with the ball, we somehow managed to find ourselves 1-0 down inside 30 seconds. The remainder of the half was end-to-end stuff and the teams looked relatively evenly matched. Unfortunately, Copthorne heads went down once Cottesmore scored their second goal midway through the second half and three more goals quickly followed to give the scoreline a very one-sided look.
Looking back, I hope the boys will recognise that they have learnt a lot about the game in the past few weeks. More importantly, I hope they will reflect on the importance of being properly focused during training sessions, listening to their coaches and putting into practice during matches the plans that have been worked on during training. This is all we can ask, and there’s no doubt that the boys who can answer ‘yes’ to all of the above are the boys who have made the most progress this season! MM
