In the Coen brothers’ latest movie the heroine seeks a man with ‘True Grit’ to help her quest. She would have had plenty to choose from amongst the ranks of Copthorne’s B-string hockey team today as the boys put on a fantastic performance against a really strong Ardingly team, going down 3-0 but leaving the pitch with their heads held high.
Some fabulous goalkeeping from Sam in the first half, allied with positive defending from Si Yoon and the two Olivers (H & C), kept Ardingly at bay until the final minutes of the opening period when an incident with a missing gum-shield left a gaping hole in our defence for Ardingly to run through and score…
Copthorne strove hard throughout the second half to gain an equaliser with Jamie, Harry, Max, Ryan and James occasionally combining to great effect to stretch the Ardingly defence. However the home side’s greater technique paid-off in the end and, despite a cameo second-half performance by Nils together with brilliant work by Min Chan and player-of-the-match Gianluca in defence, they eventually forced a couple more goals past Morgan to put the gloss on the final scoreline.
Well played boys – you never let Ardingly wear you down and showed just how competitive Copthorne boys can be, even when they are the underdogs! MM
