Monday night saw the first of the boys indoor hockey this calendar year v Cumnor House. With Cumnor only bringing one team it would be a test for the B side, however the boys were confident and keen to get going.
The B side played the first game and got off to a slightly shaky start, conceding in the first few minutes. The boys kept trying hard but 6 goals were let in during the first half. At half time a few problems were addressed. Mainly both our defenders attacking at the same time which left us very exposed at the back, as well as passing across the D at the back which led to several interceptions and consequently 1 or 2 goals.
The improvement in structure was evident in the second half as Cumnor were only able to score 1 more goal, and we managed to score two of our own. A very pleasing first performance from the team and great character was shown.
The A team started strongly, and were moving the ball around the pitch very confidently. The boys had several chances to score in the first few minutes and managed to score two of those. Half time ended at 2-0.
The half time talk involved reiterating the importance of movement on the pitch when not in possession of the ball, limiting the weak stick/reverse passes that were being given and finally I didn’t want the boys to concede during the second half.
The second half went nearly according to plan as we only conceded one goal, but scored several more. Our structural play was very good considering this was the first hockey game for some time and the boys skills are coming along very nicely. Well done to all the boys on a fantastic first effort! DH
