Boys Indoor Hockey v Cumnor

29th January 2016

This was many of the boys first hockey match and after only a handful of practise sessions they all put in some excellent performances against two strong Cumnor sides. The format of the evening was for all teams to play each other apart from the other team of their own school leaving four short and fast paced matches producing lots of chances and goals.

The B team played 2 very solid matches and held their own for large parts considering how inexperienced most of the boys in the team currently are. Strong defence from Will thwarted some strong Cumnor attacks.

Attacking wise Cumnor made it difficult for the Copthorne boys but they did create a few chances. Beau finally put one away with a well taken breakaway goal, producing a nice little flick on the run to wrong foot the goalkeeper. I was very impressed with first time goalkeeper Zach who produced some fine saves time and again to keep the score down. All the B team boys played well and they will learn a lot from this experience.

The A team had a few more experienced heads within the side and at times they played some nice hockey, passing the ball around nicely and showing some good skills to beat opponents. They too defended well and put in some excellent tackles to stop oncoming Cumnor attackers. Once again the stand out player was the goalkeeper Ben who made some unbelievable last ditch saves when it looked as if the ball was all but going into the goal. The Cumnor goalkeeper had to make a few saves of his own as the Copthorne boys carved out chances. Finally with the last play of the evening, a mistake by a Cumnor defender left Zach was left one on one with the goalkeeper and he slotted the ball into the bottom corner. It was a deserved goal after all the hard work the boys put in over the two matches.

The evening will serve as a big learning curve for the boys who hopefully will have picked up a few things. There are things to work on but as a starting point all the boys should be proud of their efforts and look forward to the next game against Windlesham next Monday. CC
