Colts A Cricket v Lancing College Prep – Summer 2017

11th June 2017

It was an afternoon that was dominated by the ball as the Colts A took on Lancing Prep at Copthorne on Wednesday afternoon. Louis won the toss and put Lancing into bat. Things started well as a run out chance in the first over was taken and this was followed up with some excellent fielding. Ali caught two in two balls off Luke’s bowling to leave Lancing in a spot of bother. Wickets fell at regular intervals throughout the innings and I was really impressed with the boys catching over the whole of the innings. Shams caught two and was backed up with catches from Louis and Luke. Another run out chance was taken as Lancing’s batsmen failed to reach any meaningful scores. All the bowlers picked up wickets including Wesley, Liban, Sam and Nicholas with all bowlers bowling some fine deliveries. The only criticism of the innings was the amount of extras that were given away and it would come back to haunt the team at the end of the afternoon.

The Copthorne innings didn’t start well with a slightly dubious decision on lbw given to Luca within the first couple of overs. Scoring was hard as the Lancing bowlers were quick and accurate putting the pressure on the Copthorne batsmen. Archie was run out in a close call, as was Shams with a direct hit from a good throw by the Lancing fielder as he tried to steal a quick single. Luke and Louis were both given out lbw as they played back to deliveries they needed to play forward to and were caught right in front of the stumps. Ali was then bowled to leave the Copthorne innings in real trouble. Nicholas came in and steadied the ship as he stayed in for the rest of the innings scoring a valuable 19 runs. He was well supported by Liban (9) and Sam R (5) as Lancing struggled to take the wickets they needed to win the game. Finally it was left to Nicholas and Sam P to get the 16 runs needed off the final over. Unfortunately they fell 10 runs short of their target.

It was a great comeback after a disastrous start to the innings and I am sure that next week the boys will be in the mood to put right what went wrong this week.
