Colts ‘A’ Football v Pennthorpe

21st September 2016

Copthorne    3    Pennthorpe    3

The A’s game was very bizarre indeed. Pennthorpe were the physically stronger side, and they had more of the ball, but we went ahead with a very lucky own goal conceded as a defender headed Luca’s long throw past his own keeper! Lady Luck abandoned us soon, though, as Liban smashed a clearance straight into an opposition striker only for the ball to bounce back into our own goal past Cosmic. Things got worse, as Cosmic made some fantastic saves, rushing out to block a shot which fell kindly to a Pennthorpe player. The follow up went straight through one of our defenders who lost his balance as he was trying to make the clearance. We were behind 2-1 at half time, but had been unfortunate in the way we conceded the goals.

In the second half Cosmic continued to be one of our outstanding players, making several fantastic saves. He could do nothing, though, as a header off a corner flew into his net to make it 3-1. Things looked bleak, but we did not give up. Luca pulled one back with an amazing free kick from just inside our own half. It was a contender for goal of the season which flew into the net just below the bar. We began to attack with renewed hope, and it was Luca who nearly scored an even better goal from open play. This time he was a little closer but hit a sweet volley that beat the keeper only to crash off the top of the bar. The tide was turning and Luca played a lovely through ball to Sam P who outsprinted the defence to finish with one touch past the keeper. Luca and Cosmic have to be our men of the match, but well done to the whole team on a game where we worked hard and came back from a difficult position.
