Colts A Football vs Cottesmore

29th September 2017

A previous week of tough results saw the Colts A face up against Cottesmore, a team the boys had lost in penalty shootout in the tournament at Brambletye. Those wrongs would be put right as the boys all put in a great performance and started to show some of their potential to an expectant crowd. The game started off fairly evenly although Copthorne began to assert their dominance after a few minutes as their passing game seemed much improved from previous weeks. The first goal of the game will be tough to improve on this season. A move which saw more or less the whole team touch the ball at some point eventually saw a long ball by Ewan pick out Luke who had made a great run and he made an inch perfect cross to Ben who neatly put the ball right in the corner. A wonderful goal and one the boys should remember. The rest of the half was a tight affair with Wesley, Nicholas and Ewan mopping up any threat from Cottesmore. Sam P had a great game just in front of the defenders as he gave great protection throughout the game. Sam R as usual put in a great shift and showed some great skill on the ball.

A half time score of only 1-0 was not going to be secure enough so the boys went out with a second goal on the agenda. They got it soon after as a scuffed shot from Ben squirmed under the keeper and into the goal – they all count! The rest of the game was a tight affair with tackled flying in and chances created and squandered. Copthorne’s passing game was so much better this week and when they move the ball quickly and accurately they are a force to be reckoned with. I hope they can take this victory into next week and reproduce some of the football shown. 2-0 probably could and should have been a couple more as was the dominance of the team but a clean sheet was a real bonus. It’s not all about scoring goals – you have to stop the opposition from scoring to. Well done to all and thanks to those who came to support. It makes a huge difference.
