Colts A Netball v Great Walstead

26th February 2016

Lost 9-12

This was the first time that the girls had played together as a Colts team. It was the perfect opportunity for the girls to get some match practise before the IAPS netball tournament at Roedean next week. Copthorne won the toss and were very quickly into their stride, scoring a goal in the first minute of the game. Ruby and Abigail linked well together in mid court feeding the ball into shooters Alana and Beth. Copthorne were quicker than the opposition around court and soon added a further 2 goals to their score. Lila and Jemima put the Great Walstead shooters under pressure with their great anticipation skills and tight marking. At the end of the first quarter Copthorne were winning 5-1.

In the 2nd quarter Great Walstead upped their pace which seemed to unsettle Copthorne causing them to make too many mistakes around the court. GW took advantage of this and added 4 goals to their score in very quick succession. With the score at 5-5 Copthorne now seemed to be the team under pressure. The Copthorne shooters were up against very tall defenders and struggled to get into goal scoring opportunities and were unable to add to their score. At half time Great Walstead were in the lead by 2 goals. After a positive team talk and asking the girls to focus on driving forward they worked hard in the third quarter to try and level the score. Mallory made several fantastic interceptions mid court and linked well with Ruby and Abigail to get the ball up court. With the Great Walstead defence marking tightly and also quicker to rebound the Copthorne shooters once again struggled. At times speed of play was too quick and as a result we gave away a few passes which the opposition took advantage of. Jemima and Lila found themselves up against a shooter who didn’t miss. At the end of the third quarter Great Walstead had moved ahead 11-6. Despite the pressure from the opposition and some tired legs the whole team worked tirelessly in the last quarter to get back into the match. Their passing was sharper, movement quicker and they started to gel together as a team. They managed to add 3 more goals to their score but unfortunately time ran out and it was a win for

Great Walstead. The girls should be congratulated on their performance today as it was a closely fought match with both teams performing well. I know the girls were disappointed not to have won today but they need to work on their passes and the best to use. Well done to Mallory who was voted player of the match.
