This was the final rugby competition of the season and all of the boys were keen to end the season on a high.
We opened against Ashdown House and hit the ground running, dominating possession and playing the whole of the 10 minutes in their half. The forwards took control and after 2 pick and drives Jack F (1) crossed the whitewash for a lovely forwards try. Chris (12) added the extras to give a 7 – 0 lead which we held to the end. Excellent defence won this game and set us up nicely for the rest of the afternoon.
We played local rivals, Brambletye, in the second game and it was a similar story with the forwards controlling the game from the breakdown and taking the game to the Pink and Blacks. Our backs began running hard lines, stretching the defence and creating gaps. Another forwards try was finished off by Gabes J (4) who crashed over from close range. This time Matthew H (10) drop kicked the extra 2 points and another 7 – 0 win was recorded.
Pennthorpe were our next opponents and they proved to be a tougher challenge. Rucks were fiercely contested and tackles were becoming increasingly harder across the pitch. A well worked try, sucking our defence in narrow followed by quick ball out wide settled the game and with a missed conversion we were kicking ourselves that we didn’t make more of our chances.
The hosts, Cumnor House, provided our final opponents and in similar vain to the previous game one unconverted try settled the match. Cumnor’s pacey centre exploited a dog legged defence to ghost through and score unopposed. We had chances to score ourselves but we could not find a way past the last tackler.
This was one of the most competitive tournaments of the season with single trys separating 1st to 3rd place. One try against either Cumnor or Pennthorpe would have seen us finish joined top of outright second depending on other outcomes. As it was we finished a respectable and well deserved 3rd place.
Well done to the 14 boys who took part and thank you to all 18 boys who have represented the Colts A side this season. Preparation for next season starts now!
Good luck to those Year 6 boys, whose next challenge is to fight for a place in the 1st XV.
