After 2 weeks of frustration due to the bad weather claiming fixtures against Duke of Kent and Handcross Park it was fantastic to finally take to the field on what was a lovely afternoon in Hove.  A few changes to the starting line-up and in the replacements show the strength in depth that this current Colts age group can boast.

The opening exchanges were rather rusty with forwards and backs struggling to find a connection which resulted in some over playing in key areas but once they clicked I knew the scoreboard was going to have a busy day!  I don’t want to dwell too much on individuals as I feel this was our best team display of the season so far.  Put aside the solo trys from Chris and Zac C the other 6 scores were due to pure teamwork.  The forwards set the platform with strong drives and clinical rucking, whilst the backs ran straight and got the ball moving through the hands for the first time this season.  It really was a joy to watch and the comments from the Lancing referee were very complimentary towards the way the boys played the game.

In all we had 7 different scorers with Zac R, Chris (2), Will, Zac C, Jack F, Jack H and Nico all crossing the white wash but if it wasn’t for the hard work of Zevon, Zach P, Gabriel, Elliott, Alex and Oliver these trys would not have been possible.  The determination shown to keep a clean sheet was phenomenal with tackles being made across the whole pitch and this was highlighted late in the game when Lancing’s dangerous runner broke away to a certain score only to be caught by our centre pairing with the try line in stretching distance.  Beau and Bradley came on in the 2nd half and slotted seamlessly in the team and credit must go to the Year 6’s who continuously tried to get the young pair involved in attack and kept them disciplined in defence.

The real tests now begin with Pennthorpe at home next week followed by Great Walstead and Hazelwood, so I expect the same level of focus in games lessons and an increase in desire to keep your shirt.  It’s easy to be selected for the team; the difficulty comes in keeping your place.  Train hard, fight easy!
