A performance that didn’t match the result. The A team put in a skilled and spirited performance on Wednesday afternoon against St Christopher’s but were caught on the break too many times which would cost them the game. Copthorne played most of the good football throughout and passed the ball around really well and put in some great tackles. Chances came at a premium although the long shots from Sam P and Sam R came close to scoring. The first goal for St Christopher’s caught Copthorne too high up the pitch and after an initial good save from Matthew the rebound was smartly put in. The boys didn’t let their heads go down and they battled hard for an equaliser. Luke worked hard throughout the game and his speed was a real thorn in St Christopher’s side. Ewan was always calm and collected when in possession and made some clever passes and Sam, playing his usual role in front of the defence swept most things up that came his way. A half time score of 1-0 was good enough and something for the boys to work at. The second half was much like the first with Copthorne passing and moving really nicely only for St Christopher’s to take the ball at the vital moment and break up the pitch to score past Matthew who was left one on one too many times. Nicholas and Wesley put in some great tackles to keep the opposition out but their skilful players were a real handful all afternoon. When the score got to 4-0 you could have forgiven the boys for putting their heads down. This never happened though as Sam R won yet another ball in midfield and the boys was passed around before Ben coolly swept the ball in from close range for a well-deserved Copthorne goal. A 4-1 loss really does not give a true reflection of the game and the boys should be proud of their efforts and be pleased with the way they played. Sometimes things just don’t go your way.
