Colts B Cricket v Lancing College Prep – Summer 2017

11th June 2017

The Colts B team welcomed Lancing Prep to Copthorne this week. After we lost the toss and Lancing opted to put us into bat, William and Antony opened the Copthorne innings. Frustratingly, a mix-up in the middle on the third ball of the day resulted in Antony being run out before he had scored. William was joined by Matthew and this looked likely to be a productive partnership when they both struck the ball sweetly for boundaries early on. However, the Lancing bowlers were keeping a good line and length and Matthew played-on after scoring 5 runs. Henri was next to the crease and he played a ball nicely off his legs before slipping while running and survived being struck on the leg by the ball from a fielder’s throw. Soon after, however, he was bowled and James soon followed in similar fashion without scoring. Cosmic was next to bat and he settled quickly, playing a number of scoring shots off his legs, including a couple of boundaries. During this time William departed for 13 runs having looked likely to score much more. Cosmic was then steady at one end while Ronnie departed without scoring (bowled), Ben scored 2 but looked well set before being caught out from a firmly hit shot and Kochi was bowled for 5. Ewan was also bowled without scoring before Cosmic was finally very well caught for 14. This left Dhruv alone at the wicket on zero. Despite looking very capable with the bat in hand, Copthorne had only scored 56 runs on account of some very tidy bowling from Lancing.

This was always going to be a difficult total to defend and in fact it took Lancing 14 overs to reach our total for the loss of only 1 wicket, but we played on to complete the full 20 overs. Henri kept wicket and everyone else bowled a couple of overs. Ben was the most economic bowler with just 3 runs conceded off his two overs, James certainly had the fastest delivery, Kochi took the most wickets (2), Ewan also took a wicket and Cosmic was probably the most consistent.

Overall, I was very pleased with the way the boys conducted themselves while their teammates were batting and also in the field. Man of the Match goes to Cosmic for holding the innings together and also for his enthusiasm and attitude in the field. Well done all but don’t give your wickets away so cheaply next week!
