A mysterious injury crisis in the Colts A meant losing Ben K and Oli V at the last minute, but their places were taken by Jerome and Zak who fitted into the back line seamlessly!
We knew Pennthorpe would be strong, and on a pretty grotty Wednesday afternoon they kicked off and showed off their fluent passing of the ball and rucking skills immediately. A shell-shocked Copthorne did not mesh together and quickly the Pennthorpe pack had sneaked over for an early score. They then unleashed the quickest winger on the circuit who ran in 2 tries from the half way line without breaking sweat. A down hearted Copthorne needed to start working as a team- the 5 man scrum was not winning enough ball and half time could not come soon enough.
With the downhill advantage, the second half was a different story. A much more open and even game followed, and with the front 5 working as a team we started winning in the rucks. Captain Josh was in the wars, but his wounds bear testament to his tenacious play and he was supported by man-of-the-match James R who never stopped trying to rip the ball in the mauls. With scrum half George trying to ship the ball down the line we did attack at times and it was Ian who came closest with a great run down the left wing.
Mattie was effervescent as ever in the centres, and Ben V made a pleasing debut on the wing. The final score of 45-0 does not reflect the overall game which was played at a good pace, and the second half definitely gives us some positives on which to build on before next weeks fixture.
