We took our 8 best Colts football players to Cumnor House this weekend to compete for the first time in the Independent Schools Football Association Regional Tournament. The standard of football was impressive, with all teams fighting to reach the final in order to qualify for the national competition at the end of the season.
Group Stage, Match 1
Copthorne 2 Yardley Court 1
We played excellent football in the first half of this match, scoring two quick goals through Nemo and Beau to get a vital win, but Yardley fought back in the second half and got one goal back in a close fought game.
Group Stage, Match 2
Copthorne 1 Bedes 2
This was our toughest game against a side that deservedly went on to win the group. They scored first when a clearance rebounded off an attacker in front of the Bade’s striker who managed to score even though Nick did extremely well to palm the shot onto the post. A second followed from the spot after a fairly soft penalty was awarded to the opposition. Beau got a goal back after reacting fast to a poor goal kick to put the ball into the back of the net, but the better team won this game and this decided the fight for first in the group.
Group Stage, Match 3
Copthorne 6 Marlborough House 0
This was our easiest group game, and everything went well for us. Nemo and Beau were both excellent in attack, and each got a hat trick, the best goal probably being Nemo’s header running on to a fine in swinging corner from Sam. Zevon produced a miraculous goal-line clearance to stop a certain goal and showed great bravery as he collided with the post in making the block. Everyone in the team played well, Bradley was excellent though still recovering from illness, and our two year fives Sam and Ben also made excellent contributions.
Round of 16 – Knockouts
Copthorne 1 St Ronan’s 1
We were clearly the better side in the first half of this game, and threatened to score a few times before Zac volleyed a corner home to put us ahead. We took a more defensive approach in the second half and this proved costly as St Ronan’s got more possession and gained in confidence. They levelled with a few minutes to go from an excellent long range strike which took the game into penalties. In a three man shoot out Zac and Beau took good spot kicks before an unfortunate miss saw us eliminated. The boys were disappointed and it is a frustrating way to lose, but this is the nature of tournament football. There was little to separate many of the sides playing today and in fact all of the semi finals later were decided from the penalty spot.
Well done to all the boys, you showed that Copthorne can certainly compete with the best prep schools in these two counties!
