We travelled down to Lancing College for their annual six a side tournament. This is always a good time to look at a new group of players and try people out in different positions, but the heat of the day, the quality of our group and a few injuries made it a very tough afternoon for us football-wise. James was injured in our first match, and Liban also picked up a knock with two games to spare, so we lost two defenders and had to play people out of position in several games.
Game 1 – v Windlesham – Lost 1-4
Windlesham were a very impressive side this year, and ended up as our group winners, and they were too strong for us. Luca scored a nice goal for us after good passing from Jake and Louis, but it was merely a consolation in a tough game.
Game 2 – v Great Walstead – Lost 0-4
Another tough game, with James already injured, and Walstead, who have won this competition before were also too good a side for us. Sam R and Esaam battled well, and Ewan defended solidly, but being Year 5’s they found it quite tough against older and bigger opponents.
Game 3 – v St Pauls Cathedral – Drew 1-1
This was a close game and we went behind before Esaam finished confidently to level the match. We probably dominated possession slightly and had a few more chances, but with only 5 mins each way, did not have time to get the winner.
Game 4 – v Bedes – Lost 1-3
Bedes were a very big and physically strong side and our boys struggled to cope with their power. With 4 out of our 9 players being a year young, we were outmuscled in this encounter, though Luca got his second goal of the day.
Game 5 – v Belmont – Drew 0-0
We needed a win in this game to progress to the knockouts, and probably should have won, as we created the best chances, but were unable to finish these off. Cosmic was called on a few times in goal and did well, but the win eluded us and we ended up going home early.
Well done to all the boys, but this was a lesson in the standards we need to reach if we want to have a good season. We will have to work hard in training and be more organised defensively to improve in future matches.
Under 11 Squad: Cosmic, James, Ewan, Liban, Louis, Jake, Sam R, Esaam, Luca
