St Aubyns    5    Copthorne    3

Our Scorers: Andy, Ian H, and Morgan

Our first eleven a side match of the season proved to be one where attack triumphed over defence, with a glut of goals making it good watching for all but the purists out there.  We came away disappointed however, at the end of the day, losing out in a game where we passed the ball at least as well as our opponents, but were not defensively well organised at all.  St Aubyns caught us napping in the first 20 mins of the game and were 3-0 up before we even realised we were in a game.  They had some pacey forwards and we took too long to get a grip on the match.  However there followed a ten minute spell where we scored two good goals and were threatening to run away with the game.  Ian and Andy both finished some nice passing sequences off with great composure, but then a runner clearly offside snuck in to score St Aubyns’ 4th and we had a goal disallowed.  We sensed that it was not going to be our day.  The second half was a better contest where Morgan turned neatly past St Aubyns’ top defender before scoring, but to credit our opponents they also scored to leave the game clearly in their hands.  Some recognition must be given to Nils, our captain who defended very solidly personally, but our back four obviously need to learn to work together better.  Hopefully we will be better next Wednesday and get the Sale cup back from Brambletye!
