Wednesday afternoon saw the under 8’s take three teams over to Handcross Park. The B team started their prep school sporting lives by accidently playing Handcross Park’s ‘A’ team. Despite this, they worked really hard, with Tobi providing some solid crunching tackles at the back and stopping many dangerous attacks from the Handcross boys. Harrison in goal was largely a spectator, but did well when required. The first Handcross goal came from a sloppy bit of defending with the Handcross player nipping in ahead of our defence to strike a low shot through a crowd of bodies past Harrison. At the start of the THIRD period of play (we decided three periods of seven minutes would work better), we made a few changed with Toby going into defence. He made a great tackle but with him still on the floor the Handcross player went past him, at which point Toby decided to use his hand to try to stop the attacker. Understandably, the referee gave a penalty which was slotted past our change goalkeeper.
Overall this was a very good start by our ‘B’ team, to lose 2-0 against the other schools ‘best’ players is certainly nothing to be ashamed of. It was great to see the attitudes of some of the boys despite not playing football too often outside of school, their effort and attitude was fantastic. A great start and hopefully a building block to progress on for future weeks.
