Having finished as runner-up in last year’s event those returning girls, along with the debutants, wanted to make amends and put their heart and soul into today’s tournament.
v Great Walstead U13A
Understandably, the girl’s took a little time to settle into the game and were snatching at the ball whenever it came near. That said we were rarely troubled at the back so never looked like conceding. Amber managed to get a shot away that the keeper fumbled over the line, however the referee decided against awarding the goal so the game finished a frustrating 0-0.
v Handcross Park
This was a much better performance as we began to find our rhythm and passing game. Once again our defence of Alice, Elise and Sheen stood strong which allowed our more attacking players to get forward and cause problems. It was Amber who opened the scoring and we recorded a 1-0 win and receive a huge confidence boost.
It was during this game where we found our flow and taste for goals. Firstly, Rosie scored from close range before Emily doubled the lead from outside the box. Hermione was now playing in a more advanced role and claimed the third goal before Amber rounded off the scoring with a nice side footed finish; 4-0 Copthorne.
v Great Walstead U12B
Knowing that a win would see us top the group we attacked right from the start in a bid to ease the pressure. Amber found the bottom corner of the goal early on to settle the nerves then Rosie popped up again to score her second of the day to give us a commanding 2 goal lead. Catherine, a late call up to the squad was on a mission to score but it just would not go in for her. Amber, again, then Hermione sealed another 4-0 win and we were on our way to the semi-finals!
v Great Walstead U12A
Knockout football adds that little bit of extra pressure where a single goal can be enough to send you home. Luckily for us that single goal was scored by Rosie, who was making a habit of being in the right place at the right time. The girls were so happy to make a second final in 2 years but they all knew that only one result in the final would really do!
v Great Walstead U13A
The final was a rematch of the opening fixture and our girls knew that they had the psychological advantage over their opponents. It was a close affair and Alice was finally called into action making 3 excellent saves. At the other end the Walstead keeper was also in good form keeping out efforts from Amber and Rosie. We were awarded a penalty early in the second half for a handball which Amber drilled straight at the keeper, it was saved but she was quick to the follow up to score what would be the winning goal. Drama surrounded the goal but I would much prefer to stick to the positives!
I was so impressed with the girls this afternoon; we only had 3 practice sessions together so to perform as we did and win the tournament was brilliant. Their conduct throughout the day and sportsmanship was a credit to our school. Well done girls, it has been my pleasure to have coached you; thank you! MA
