Girls U11 Hockey Festival at Ardingly

16th September 2016

Copthorne once again took part in Ardingly’s annual hockey festival. The aim of the afternoon was primarily for the children to have a fun afternoon and to improve their skills in a relaxed, yet competitive environment.

With only a couple of game sessions out on the grass, this was the girl’s first outing playing together as a team on Astro and one would forgive them if they were a bit rusty. This, however was not the case. Throughout the course of the afternoon the girls played a lot of attacking hockey and in some games Tia (GK) didn’t even have to touch the ball. Mallory and Tali defended superbly, displaying a good understanding of their position, allowing them to step in front of players and then distributed the ball wide to our midfield players. Gabby, Beth and Ruby worked really well in mid-field, they held their space, carried the ball strongly, even when 2 or 3 players from the opposition were closing fast. They looked to drive down the wings and attacked the circle, creating many opportunities and short corners. Our forwards Emily and Macie also found themselves in the mix, keeping the opposition defenders on their toes. They did a fantastic job in moving the defenders around, making them think about their passes and free hits.

By the end of the afternoon the girls were pleased about their efforts and eagerly wait for next week’s matches.

Mallory was awarded the MVP as she was consistent throughout the 8 mini games they played. She was solid at the back, reading the game well and distributing the ball quickly and accurately.
Ruby was chosen as MIP player as she took on board all the coaching points and tried to implement them into the matches.

Well done to all the girls for their never give up attitude and team spirit, and also a huge thank you to the parents for coming out to lend their support.

Team: Tia, Mallory, Tali, Gabby, Beth, Ruby H, Emily and Macie.
