Junior Cross Country at Brambletye

1st February 2017

The junior cross country team made the short trip to Brambletye for the annual race against Handcross Park, Ashdown House, Lingfield Notre Dame and the hosts themselves. This was a team event where all 8 runners, 4 girls and 4 boys, scored points based on their finishing positions with the lowest scoring team crowned the winner.

People often think that cross country is an individual event however what we witnessed was one of the best team running performances that I have ever seen. Our tactic was to send out our pacesetters and force the opposition into chasing us to tire them out early. From here our second wave would push on and cluster together and attempt to get some consecutive placings. Inevitably as the race progressed there were tired legs amongst the team so gaps did begin to appear but we had more than enough left in the tank to record some sensational placings.

For the boys we had Sam (3rd), Jake (5th), Archie (7th) and Henri (12th) performing excellently but it was the girls who stole the show with Gabi (1st), Katie (2nd), Biba (3rd) and Beth (8th) casting a sea of red over the home straight.

With boys and girls scores combined we were clear winners by around 20 points and recorded Copthorne’s best ever finish at this event. I couldn’t ask for anymore from the team; the boys and girls teams were the best in their respective races and fully deserved their overall victory. Thank you to the 8 children for their efforts and thank you to the parents who came to support them…we also won the biggest crowd award!

On to the next race!
