Finally, the 4th July arrived! We had been waiting for this date all summer so that our qualifiers could pit their wits against the best in the country. 7 athletes in total travelled to Birmingham to take part in 11 events, a great achievement in itself for Copthorne Prep.
Parents, siblings, grandparents and gap students all turned out for the day…and what a day it turned out to be!

This was certainly our most successful athletics championships in my time at Copthorne, with 4 medals being won, and I would love to find out if we have ever bettered that. It is difficult for some children to understand what a great achievement it is just to qualify for the National finals and they will always pick out the negatives in their performance. All 7 athletes gave their all and whether they brought home a medal or not we as a school are proud of them. Athletics is only a small part of the sporting calendar so to compete at this level after only a terms’ worth of practice is fantastic. I am already looking forward to next season!
National Medallists:
Zac C – Gold in Shot Put, Daniel T – Silver in 200m, Daniel P – Silver in Hurdles, Zac R – Bronze in Discus
