It was a case of meeting up with old foes and old friends this afternoon as the seconds took on Ashdown.  It was great to see Mr Fitt again; now disguised as the Ashdown coach and referee for our match today.  Ashdown started off well by kicking deep.  Evan ran the ball back strongly, making good ground, and this was something that he did all afternoon for us.  He weaved his way through several tackles, but somehow we lost the ball at the break-down, and Ashdown’s outstanding player stormed through a couple of weak tackles to score.  So we found ourselves 5 points down within two minutes.  We responded very well, though, and it wasn’t long before we were putting Ashdown under pressure.  Our forwards have been very strong all season, and Lani and German made numerous strong runs at our opponents.  They also went smashing into the rucks again and again, supported well by Nafim, Jack and Joe.  We won a lot of ball, and man of the match German smashed over to level the scores.  Evan added two points with a great kick, and it wasn’t long before we scored our second.  Sam was the eventual try scorer, but our try involved some excellent passing and more than half of the team got their hands on the ball in the process.  This was the best try that the seconds have scored all season.  Sam eventually was to score a hat-trick, but his third deserves special mention as he miraculously caught a loose pass from somewhere behind his ear whilst running at full pace, before going over the line.  Ben was excellent at scrum-half, running straight into the opposition without any fear.  He made the tackle of the game to put a stop to a threatening run from one opponent, and also broke the corner flag while attempting to dive in for a try.  His partner in crime, George played well at fly-half, mainly distributing the ball well to people outside him in a better position.  Daniel had a very solid game playing out of position in the centres and I must also say well done to Fred and Archie our wings.  Archie got his first game of the season today and he made several positive runs to gain us some valuable ground.  In the last five minutes of play, we let ourselves down a little by allowing Ashdown’s most dangerous player to score two quick tries.  Nonetheless a good result.  Well done to the whole team; the Seconds Steam-roller grinds out another win!
