Sussex Prep Schools Athletics Championships, K2 Crawley

19th June 2016

Despite the torrential rain and thunder storms the Sussex Champs went ahead and we are glad it did! For those of you who are new to the athletics programme the Sussex Championships brings together over 30 prep schools from Sussex (plus a couple from Surrey) so that their selected Year 6, 7 and 8 athletes can compete for a place at the National Finals. In order to qualify the athlete must win their event to gain automatic qualification or come 2nd and meet the required standard.

21 of our finest athletes took part this year, all who can compete at the qualifying standard so we were hopeful of success whether that be personal bests (PB), school records (SR), podium finishes and even national finals qualification (Q).

Well done to all 21 of our athletes; they performed admirably in tough conditions and the whole day was a huge success. I am proud of each and every one of them and they should also be proud of themselves.

In total Copthorne won 5 Gold, 5 Silver and 4 Bronze with 18 personal bests and 6 new school records! This was one of the most successful days in Copthorne athletic history and it was topped off with 6 of our athletes qualifying for the National Finals on 4th July at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham.

National Finalists:

Austin A (Shot Put and Discus), Jemima C (Shot Put and Discus), Zac C (Shot Put and Discus), Daniel T (100m and 200m), Zac R (Discus) and Daniel P (75m Hurdles)

Thank you
