The first outing for the swim team saw Year 3 join the usual team for a gala kindly hosted by Hurstpierpoint. Tension was high at the start of the gala and nerves proved a little too much for some of our younger swimmers in what was their first time swimming for the school. However, once things got going and we had a few successful races under our belt, the swimmers settled into their tasks and not a single one could be accused of not giving their best for the team.
Freestyle has often been an area where we have lacked success, mainly due to the better swimmers being used for other strokes. On this occasion we swam particularly well and won seven of the twelve races. The back stroke swimmers also did us proud with four wins out of six, whilst the two schools matched each other race for race in the breast stroke and butterfly events.
Scores were very close at the end of the individual events with just two points separating the teams. With both medley and freestyle relays we had high hopes of securing a win. Our medley squads secured first place in four of the six events and the freestylers in five out of six. When the final scores were calculated, Copthorne came out winners by 64 pints to 56.
Well done to all the swimmers. A great start to the swimming calendar.
