A new event entered our calendar this season with a trip to Cumnor House for a four way cross country relay with Ardingly, Burgess Hill and the hosts.

Six boys and six girls each from Years 5 and 6 made up the squad of 24 runners and in true Copthorne fashion we also had a handful of Year 4’s in there. Each team ran in their own sub-race with a view to earn points for the overall team competition.

With each runner completing a hilly 1km course before tagging their team mate it made for a thrilling spectacle and an enjoyable run for the athletes.

The Teams:

Year 5 Girls – Harley, Tianna, Katie, Jennifer, Bella, Biba

Year 5 Boys – Marcos, Luis, William, Henry, Charlie, Alexander

Year 6 Girls – Annabelle, Eva, Kirsten, Robin, Ellie, Zara

Year 6 Boys – Luke, Thomas, Archie, Henri, Matthew, Sam

With all four races happening at the same time it was often difficult to work out positions until the runners entered the changeover box. As the race developed it then became clear which teams were pushing for top placings and the competition began to heat up. The Year 5 Boys’ and Year 6 Girls’ teams both put in gritty performances and although they crossed the line in 4th place there was not much distance between them and the teams in front. The Year 6 Boys’ went that step further, running magnificently to grab a 2nd place finish but it was the Year 5 Girls’ who stole the show with a dominating run to take 1st place.

There were no prizes for individual team races as the competition was a whole school event so when all points were collated we were pleased to hear that we had secured 2nd place overall. Each school had to nominate a boy and girl runner of the day and for Copthorne they were Katie, who took her team from 3rd to 1st in her leg, and Sam who I believe ran the quickest leg of the day!

Well done to all 24 runners. I could not have asked for anymore from you; double effort stars are on their way to you.
