Scorers: Morgan (3)
The First XI can walk proud again, knowing that they are the ones who have regained the Sale Cup for Copthorne. This is a small piece of silverware, but it is a prize that we have fought against Brambletye on the football pitch for, ever since the early 1950s when Mr David Sale was our headmaster. This match, above all others, stands out on our calendar and is marked down from the beginning of every season as the one that must be won. Sadly the cup has been in Brambletye’s hands more often than not over the last few years, but now it has come home.
We dominated the match right from the start, but came together at half time hardly able to accept the fact that we were 1-0 down. Brambletye had one attack in the first half, but they scored from it, while we had hit the crossbar and wasted half a dozen fine opportunities. I told the boys to keep playing the way they started, and that in time the goals would come, and this turned out to be true. Our first came from the penalty spot after a handball in the box. Morgan blasted the spot kick home, and you could see the confidence surging through every player in the team. Nils and James N had little trouble in defence, as Brambletye really struggled to play through our mid-field. Andy and Jamie W were flying into the tackles and setting up a fine platform for us to play from. Edward went on the rampage down the right wing, terrorising his opposite full back and pinging numerous crosses into the box. Andy was voted man of the match by the players, but the award should probably be shared between him and Morgan who scored a fantastic hat-trick and hit the wood-work twice. If we had played the simple pass a little more quickly in attack, instead of trying long range shots or trying to pull the ball back to create the perfect chance we could have had a hatful of goals. All in all though, a fantastic result and a great performance from every single player out there. Well done lads; this was a game that you can look back on for years to come with a sense of pride… a very fine performance all round!
Keep your eyes open as you walk in to the school in the mornings… there it will sit in our front hallway… the little trophy on the mantlepiece is back where it belongs. Boys from Copthorne have been playing for that trophy since before some of your grand-parents were born. And now it’s home. Thanks to you lads!
