On Wednesday the girls set off for their hockey tournament at The Triangle, Burgess Hill; there was a total of 16 schools participating. The Copthorne girls were placed in group D along with Lancing, Bedes, and Vinehall. The matches were only 10 minutes one way with a short interval of 2 min in between games.

The girls started off their tournament against Lancing, and proceeded to win 1-0. However the shortness of the matches meant that the girls had to quickly learn to adjust their playing tactics. It took the girls a few minutes to get settled and realise that the pace of the game would be a lot quicker than normal due to the limited time to score. In the second game the girls faced Bede’s and came away with a convincing 2-0 win, with goals being scored by Harley and Ffion, both goals were assisted by Biba.

Unfortunately the girls drew to Vinehall in their final pool match and due to goal differences came 2nd in the pool. Thus the girls went on to face Great Walstead in the quarter finals. Unfortunately the girls lost 1-0 to the side that ended up second overall. The girls worked extremely hard and gave their best, but unfortunately on the day, it was not up to the standard of the two teams who made it to the final. The girls had to learn a hard lesson about the discipline needed in short gamed tournaments where every minute and every shot on goal counts. It was not the best reflection of the girls ability, however they have all significantly improved from their very first tournament. I am very proud of how far the girls have come together as a team and I thoroughly look forward to seeing where their hockey takes them!
