There are very few occasions during the term when I have the opportunity to watch other rugby sides in the school but Wednesday was one of those. The U13’s were, fortunately as a number of the team were away on senior school sports scholarships, without a game and so I was able to take the U10 B’s up to Caterham. I have to say that, despite the miserable weather it was a most enjoyable afternoon. I had managed to have a short training session with the boys on Tuesday and I was very impressed with the attitude and obvious talent of the boys. After the initial nervousness the boys quickly got into the game and there was an early score from Ronnie after good work at the breakdown and some excellent handling given the wet conditions. Further first half tries followed from Thomas S, Ewan and Henri. What was more impressive for me was the build up to the tries with tackles flying in and great body position producing almost constant possession with the tries being the inevitable conclusion. The technique of all the boys at the ruck was excellent with the smaller boys driving the larger opposition off the ball. The tackling was solid and the boys worked well as a team which is what this game is all about. Further tries from Ewan and Henri added to the score and then Finley went over to seal a well-deserved win. Confidence is a great thing in sport and it was encouraging to see how the boys grew as the game progressed. Everyone got involved and clearly, if this is the B’s, it is a very talented age group and I very much look forward to them arriving at the top of the school. Well done boys and a big thank you to the gallant Mum’s who braved what were pretty miserable conditions.
