U11 A Netball – Pelican Cup at Brighton College – March 2017

20th March 2017

Netball Pelican Cup @ Brighton College

After a very successful netball season the U11A Netball squad were travelling to Brighton College to play in the Pelican Cup. 12 teams were competing for the Pelican Cup and Copthorne were in the same group as Brighton College Prep, Ashdown House, Lancing College, Great Walstead and Broomwood Hall. Matches were 8 minutes one way with 5 points being awarded for a win, 3 for a draw and 1 for over 50% of the oppositions score.

Match 1 v Ashdown House             Won 10-6
Copthorne made a very strong start to the tournament with shooters Beth and Alana working well within the D supported by Ruby and Emily. Gabi, Alayna and Mallory were solid in defence marking the opposition tightly and making some great interceptions to regain possession of the ball.

Match 2 v Broomwood Hall             Won 6-2
Both teams looked to be evenly matched in the first few minutes of the game and with the score at 2-2 Copthorne started to take control of the game. Ruby had a superb game at centre working with attacking players Keira and Beth to feed the ball into GS Alana. Copthorne scored 2 goals in quick succession and managed to turn the ball over several times to keep possession and win the match 6-2.

Match 3 v Brighton College Prep    Lost 1-5
Copthorne were a different team in this match! They started the game a little nervously and Brighton College scored 2 goals in quick succession. Copthorne started to rush their play and made some silly mistakes which Brighton took advantage of. By the time Copthorne had settled it was too late and Brighton won the match 5-1.

Match 4 v Great Walstead               Won 6-1
Copthorne took control of the game straight from the start. They found their form and played superbly once more.  Ruby was again instrumental at centre taking control of the game through the court. Alayna and Mallory worked tirelessly in defence making some excellent interceptions. Beth and Alana worked the ball close to the post moving superbly within the D to make sure every shot counted.  A very good win against a strong Great Walstead team.

Match 5 v Lancing College              Won 14-0
In this match Copthorne were on fire and gave a first class demonstration of their Netball skills. It was a fantastic team effort and Copthorne scored a total of 14 goals which was the highest number of goals scored by any team. Well done!  After the group stages Copthorne finished in 2nd place with 20 points and this meant that Copthorne were through to the semi finals where they played Windlesham House.

Semi finals v Windlesham House     Lost 4-7
This was a very close and competitive game with both teams evenly matched. With the score 4-4 it looked like Copthorne would take the lead but unfortunately missed their opportunity. Windlesham took advantage of this and scored 3 goals in quick succession to win the match and progress into the final.

The Pelican Cup was awarded to Brighton College Prep who beat Windlesham House in the final.

Ruby Hickmet was nominated as player of the day and awarded a mini netball for her consistency throughout the tournament and for the encouragement she gave to the whole team. The girls should all be congratulated on their performance today and I am extremely proud of their efforts throughout the tournament and netball season. Well done to the team: Alana, Beth(C), Emily, Keira, Ruby(C), Gabi, Mallory and Alayna. I would also like to say a big thank you to all the parents who supported the girls today and also throughout the netball season.
