With the regional IAPS Netball Tournament being played on Thursday the girls were keen to play their last match before the tournament and try out set plays which they had been working on during the week. Great Walstead won the toss and took first centre pass and it wasn’t long before they scored the first goal. However Copthorne was soon on the attack and Beth scored our first goal. Both teams seemed to be evenly matched although Copthorne’s passing was a little too quick and as a result we lost possession of the ball on several occasions. With the score 2-2 Copthorne started to calm down and began to take control of the match. There were some great interceptions from Gabi, Mallory and Alayna and at the end of the quarter Copthorne were in the lead 6-2.
In the second quarter our passing was stronger and there was some great passing between our attacking players Ruby, Emily and Beth working the ball into GS Alana. The opposition were determined too and the game was very competitive with both teams scoring several goals. At half time Copthorne had increased their lead 11 goals to 6.
In the second half the game continued to be very competitive and the opposition started to put Copthorne under pressure. The intensity and pace of the game increased which led to both teams making mistakes and losing possession. Shooters were rushing their shots and were not working the ball close to the post. At the end of the quarter Copthorne had added only 2 more goals to their score.
After a poor third quarter and with only one quarter left Copthorne were ready to give it their all. Copthorne once again worked as a team demonstrating a high level of skill and finished the game strongly. Shooters Beth and Alana’s movement in the D was superb, one player holding whilst the other moved. Alayna and Mallory worked tirelessly in defence making some fantastic interceptions preventing the opposition from advancing the ball. When the final whistle went Copthorne had won the match 18-8.
Congratulations to Beth and Alana for being voted jointly player of the match for their fabulous shooting. Well done girls this is a very encouraging result to take through to the IAPS tournament on Thursday. A big thank you to all the supporters today.
