U11 A Netball v Lingfield Notre Dame

13th January 2017

After a long Christmas break the girls were keen to get onto the netball courts and play their first netball match of the season. Ruby H was captain today and LND won the toss and took first centre pass. Right from the start you could see that this was going to be a tightly contested game. The opposition were both tall and fast around the court but Copthorne managed to equal their speed and agility. Ruby H and Beth worked fantastically well together in the centre court getting the ball into the circle. Mallory, Alayna and Ruby O marked the opposition tightly following their every move. The game was very evenly matched with goals going with centre pass. With the score at 3-3 Copthorne missed a couple of shots and the LND defenders were quicker to rebound. At the end of the first quarter LND were in the lead 5-3. At the start of the second quarter Copthorne scored the first goal and were now only a goal behind. The match became very intense and the pace of the game increased. This led to both teams making careless mistakes. When the whistle went for half time LND had managed to keep their 2 goal advantage with the score 9-7.

After a well deserved drink and a team talk the girls were determined to get the goals back. Their marking was super tight which put the LND team under pressure. Mallory, Ruby O and Alayna made some fantastic interceptions in defence giving Copthorne possession of the ball. Ruby H, Emily and Beth worked tirelessly around centre court to give Copthorne every opportunity to score goals. Shooters Alana and Beth were working well with each other within the circle and were quick to rebound their shots. At the end of the quarter LND were still in the lead but only by a goal. With the score at 11-10 Copthorne’s spirits were lifted and the whole team played the last quarter of the match with endless energy and determination. Once again Copthorne put the opposition under pressure which lead to the LND team making some mistakes which Copthorne took advantage of.  In the last few minutes of the game Copthorne drew even with LND 14-14 which resulted in a nail biting finish. With a LND centre pass the ball was passed quickly into their shooting circle but fantastic defending by Mallory gave Copthorne possession. The ball was passed up the court into the goal circle and the shooters Beth and Alana kept their cool and a goal was scored!!! The final whistle went and it was a win for Copthorne 15-14.

Congratulations to the whole team who showed such spirit and determination. Both teams displayed a very high level of skill which led to a very competitive and enjoyable afternoon of netball. Well done to Mallory who was voted player of the match by LND. Mrs Cook’s player of the match goes to the whole team.
