On Wednesday the Copthorne U11 ‘A’ girl’s travelled to Hurst to take part in their tournament. The girls were really excited to once again have the opportunity to play outside and on the Astroturf. After a brief welcome and introduction the tournament got underway. Copthorne’ s first game was against Ardingly. We had a good game against them at the Ardingly Festival earlier on in the term but struggled this time round as the girls were slow to get the ball moving and lacked the ball speed and aggression to counter attack. Although conceding two goals the girls did manage to show signs of improvements.

The girls second match was against a very tough Cumnor side and right from the start found themselves in their own half, defending attack after attack. Our defenders tried to keep us in the game as much as possible but the pressure was too much and Copthorne succumbed in the end. By the third game against Brighton the girls now had a better understanding of their positions and roles on the pitch, thus allowing them more time on the ball. The space opened up giving the ball carrier time to make much more informed passes and creating some scoring opportunities. Brighton managed to take the lead from a breakaway but the girls kept their shape and continued to attack. Their perseverance and work rate paid off went Beth scored the equalizer soon after.

After a short break and crisps to refuel the girls took on Hurst, this was a very evenly match game with both teams sharing equal chances and possession with the game ending in a draw. Throughout the day and match after match the girls slowly picked up and improved in all areas. By the time the girls met Brambletye in their last game they had more control, accurate passes, and dodged players and kept the keeper very busy. Beth was again on the score sheet and very unlucky not to have added more. The girls ended off the afternoon with a win and eager to tuck into their doughnuts.

Well played to you all.
