U11 Netball v St. Christopher’s

20th January 2017

This week the U11 A’s opponents were St Christopher’s and the match was played at Southwick Leisure centre. The girls were in high spirits after their victory last week and were hoping to continue their winning streak! Mallory was captain today and won the toss. It took a little while for Copthorne to get into their groove and adjust to the smaller court and St Christopher’s took an early lead. Copthorne responded by turning over the ball to regain possession and scoring to equalise. Towards the end of the first quarter the girls were timing their moves well and started to look the stronger team. At the end of the quarter Copthorne were in the lead 5-2.

In the second quarter Copthorne built on their lead and on many occasions the transition of the ball through the court was excellent. Ruby O, Mallory and Alayna were solid in defence and quick to intercept the ball. Ruby H and Beth used their speed around the centre court to link with GS Alana.  Further goals were scored by Beth and Alana and at half time the score was 12-4.

After a well deserved drink of water and team talk with emphasis on keeping possession and holding space the girls were all set for the second half. With a squad of 10 players some positional changes were also made. The girls got off to a flying start despite not having first centre pass and a goal was quickly scored by Alana. Throughout the quarter the girls continued to work as a team with great movement off the ball and players holding their space. Ruby H, Ruby O and Beth’s quick passing was too good for the St Christopher girls at times. Shooters Tali and Alana played some great netball within the circle passing the ball to whoever was closest to the post and Copthorne finished the quarter leading 18-5.

In the final quarter some additional changes were made but Copthorne soon adapted and were once more in their groove scoring goals. When the final whistle went it was a win for Copthorne 23-5. Congratulations to Ruby H who was voted player of the match and well done to the team for yet another excellent display of netball!
