With very little turnaround between the end of the football season and the start of the rugby season we only had time for a couple of training sessions before the visit of St Christopher’s.
As the B’s game had to be cancelled it allowed me to select a larger squad, giving more boys the opportunity to stake a claim for a spot in the A team. The plan for today was to keep it simple; run hard lines, be in support of the ball carrier and move the ball in attack. In defence it was to make our one on one tackles and ruck with purpose. It was clear from the start that we were going to be on the front foot so it was important to stick to the game plan so not to get overexcited. We played with patience, plays the phases and the gaps appeared. We crossed the try line 7 times in the first half and were never under any real pressure. It is a rare sight to see five substitutes being used in 20 minutes of game time but that highlights the strength in depth that we have in Year 6. It did not matter which 9 boys were on the pitch, they continued to play rugby and score tries.
It was a similar story in the second half as the good play continued, the players kept on rotating and the tries kept on coming. This really was a top team performance where all 14 boys worked hard for each other, were unselfish in attack and put in to practice what they have been working on in training. Another 6 tries were added to the total in the second twenty minutes and with the visitors grabbing a late consolation try the final score was 13-1.
There will certainly be more difficult games to come but it is always nice to get off to a good start. The try scorers were Sam P (3), Luke F (3), Nicholas C (2), Shams K, Wesley S, Christopher F, Thomas S and Archie M but we can not ignore the part that Sam R, Ewan M, Matthew B, William C, Ronnie S and Ruari F played in the victory.
I am already looking forward to Friday’s training session as I believe this is a group of players that I can push further and introduce more complex patterns. Windlesham away for the A’s next week.
