U11 Six-a-Side Tournament @ Brambletye

20th September 2017

Tuesday afternoon saw the U11s travel to Brambletye for their annual 6 a side tournament. Copthorne were drawn in a difficult group with St Christopher’s, Ashdown and Brambletye.

The first game against St Christopher’s was a tight game with both sides missing opportunities and most of the game played in the midfield. Neither side could find the back of the net so a 0-0 score line was not a bad start. Seeing as St Christopher’s went on to win the tournament this was actually a better result than it seemed at the time.

The next game against Ashdown was a bit of a disappointment. Copthorne were on top for large parts of the game but couldn’t find the final touch to score. Ashdown scored an excellent goal against the run of play and managed to hold out for a 1-0 win.

The final group game was always going to be a tough one against Brambletye, a strong side who ha beaten us a week previously. It was a great start when Ben launched a rocket of a shot into the top corner for an early lead. Brambletye went straight up the other end and scored an equally impressive goal and followed this up with 2 more to take a 3-1 lead. Half time was a different game with the boys getting really stuck in and not giving Brambletye an easy game at all as they struggled against the physicality of the Copthorne boys. The game ended 3-1 but the second half was a better performance and one I hope the boys can bring out more often.

This meant a plate semi final against Belmont. Another tight game saw both sides go close but again the dead lock couldn’t be broken at full time. A golden goal period ensued where Copthorne were on top and wasted a couple of chances before a freak goal from Belmont from the half way line ended the game in disappointing fashion.

A final game against Cottesmore summed up the day with a goal eluding us for the whole game. In the penalty shoot out, both teams scored and missed but it was Cottesmore who would take the win with the final penalty.

Not the best of days for the team but more opportunities this week with a game Wednesday and another tournament on Friday.
