U11A Hockey Tournament @ Hurst – Winners!

28th September 2017

This was the U11s second hockey tournament in a week! There were 9 schools taking part and Copthorne were in Group B with teams from Hurst, Ardingly, Brighton and Burgess Hill. Matches were 8mins one way with 2 minutes between each game. 3 points were awarded for a win, 2 for a score draw and 1 point for a no score draw.

Match 1 Copthorne v Hurst
Drew 0-0
Copthorne had first pass back and were straight on the attack and into the D but the Hurst defenders managed to clear the ball. Both teams showed great skill and the game was evenly matched. Keira and Amreet were strong in defence and although Copthorne forwards had several shots on goal they could not find the back of the net!

Match 2 Copthorne v Ardingly
Lost 1-0
Although this was a very tightly contested match with both teams having scoring opportunities Ardingly took advantage of a quickly taken free hit before Copthorne could reposition themselves and scored a goal on the break.

Match 3 Copthorne v Burgess Hill
Won 2-0
Copthorne started the match looking the dominant side. Gabi played superbly in the centre with great vision and control feeding the ball to the forwards. Copthorne kept their shape putting the opposition under a lot of pressure. After picking up the ball on the right Zara drove towards the D and scored a fabulous goal. This lifted Copthorne’s spirit and Copthorne continued to put the pressure on Burgess Hill. Their efforts were rewarded with a goal scored by Biba.

Match 4 Copthorne v Brighton
Drew 0-0
A very competitive match and once again Copthorne’s forwards were very unlucky not to score with some very good goalkeeping from the Brighton Goal keeper.
After a very tight group Copthorne then played the winners and runners-up of Group A

Match 5 Copthorne v St Christopher’s
Drew 0-0
St Christopher’s were the winners of Group A but this did not deter the Copthorne team. Copthorne kept their shape and chased every ball. Both teams displayed a very high level of skill and the game was very competitive with both teams having chances. After 8 minutes the game resulted in a draw

Match 6 Copthorne v Cumnor
Won 2-0
Copthorne continued to go from strength to strength and dominated the play. Their efforts were awarded by goals from Annabelle and Biba.

Match 7 Copthorne v Brighton
Drew 0-0
Although we had already played Brighton in the group rounds all was still to play for. Once again it was a very competitive match. Zara unfortunately got hit by a stick and was unable to play on. Charlotte moved onto the forward line and Copthorne soon adapted and were very unlucky not to score.

Match 8 Copthorne v Ardingly
Won 1-0
After 7 games of hockey and some tired legs Copthorne didn’t disappoint. They put the pressure on the opposition straight from the start and were rewarded with a goal. They managed to keep their cool and Amreet and Keira defended extremely well. Ardingly were awarded a short corner just before the whistle went but Copthorne were out fast and cleared the ball from the D. The game ended in a win for Copthorne.

Teams gathered and sat anxiously waiting for the results. St Christopher’s were announced as runners -up and Copthorne as winners! There was also a special award of a hockey stick to the player of the tournament. This was awarded to Gabi Holland. Well done Gabi.

Congratulations girls! What a fabulous afternoon of hockey and your efforts should be commended.
