U11 A Netball v Cottesmore – Feb 2017

26th February 2017

With the IAPS Netball tournament only a week away the girls were very keen to play their first match after the half term break. Beth was captain today and won the toss and Copthorne had first centre pass. Both teams started a little nervously and it took a while for a Copthorne to find their footing on the artificial surface.  Ruby H controlled the game exceptionally well from the centre court linking with Gabi and Beth to get the ball into GS Alana. It took several shots before shooters Beth and Alana found their range and scored Copthorne’s first goal of the match. Towards the end of the first quarter Copthorne looked the stronger side and scored a further 4 goals. In the second quarter Copthorne stepped up their game and were a lot quicker than their opponents around court, having the majority of the play. Mallory was very quick in defence making many interceptions and reading the game so well. I was pleased to see them holding space and driving forward for the ball. Copthorne demonstrated some exceptional play in the second quarter working as a team and when the whistle went for half time they had increased their lead to 12-2.

With a squad of 9 players several positional changes were made at half time and it took a while for Copthorne to adjust. Cottesmore started to put Copthorne under pressure and this resulted in an evenly matched quarter with each team scoring 2 goals. After a quick team talk and some further team changes Copthorne started the last quarter with renewed vigour. Our passing was better and Copthorne once more started to dominate and impress. Alayna and Mallory were quick in defence making it difficult for Cottesmore to advance the ball. Ruby H showed her versatility moving from centre to GA and Beth scored the goal of the match off balance and from one foot. When the final whistle went it was a convincing win for Copthorne 18-7.

Congratulations to Gabi who was voted player of the match by Cottesmore and Mrs Jenks vote goes to Ruby H and Mallory for their exceptional play throughout the game. Well done to the team; Alayna, Mallory, Ruby O, Freya, Ruby H ,Gabi,  Emily, Beth (captain), Alana.
