A game of two halves springs to mind…The U11A team travelled to Windlesham in what is traditionally a very tough fixture against a much bigger school. The first half did not exactly go to plan but it was made difficult for our boys to play any attacking rugby because of the ill-disciplined opposition defence. There were a lot of stray hands and roaming bodies around the breakdown which resulted in slow ball for our runners. Windlesham only had possession of the ball on 5 occasions in the first 20 minutes yet were 3 tries to the good at half time. I have no complaints about the tries being conceded as it was our own weak defending that was the problem. So, 3 tries down at the break, a couple of home truths about the standard of tackling and a brief discussion between the 2 coaches. The breakdown area in the second half was refereed superbly and we began to pick up penalties in vital areas and build a platform to attack from. Another lacklustre tackle gave Windlesham their 4th try but it seemed to light the fuse, so to speak, and off we went. Shams began to play a dominant role in the game and picked up 2 barn storming tries before Sam P found some space out wide. Luke F jinked his way through to level the scores at 4-4 to complete a miraculous but well deserved comeback. When we thought we were going to go on take control of the game the Windlesham speedster intercepted a pass on his own 5 metre line and raced the length of the field to score what looked to be the winner; 5-4 with a minute on the clock. Another good set of phase play from our willing runners gave us good field position from which Luke F once again found space to dot down to level at 5-5. When the full time whistle blew there was a mixed feeling of relief and frustration. We knew we had done exceptionally well to come back from 4-0 down but on the other hand we knew we wasted 20 minutes of first half rugby. School sport is about learning from mistakes and putting them right the next week. An away trip to Cottesmore next Wednesday is the ideal opportunity to right our wrongs from this game. Well done to all 10 boys who made the squad this week. You battled well and fully deserved to level the game if not steal the victory.
