The girls were well keen and prepared for their match against Lingfield as they had previously met before in the semi-final of the EGHA tournament. Being ready for a tough battle helped the girls to get a great start to the match and allowed them to dictate the play. Copthorne looked positive and created many attacking moves, putting the home side quickly on the defensive. We thought we had taken the lead early on only for the ball to be judged to hit our foot before getting played into the goal. This did not upset the girls, they continued to play their game, winning the ball, moving it into space and then the early crosses into the D. Gabi did well to control the mid field and drew player after player into tackles, this left Robin free on numerous occasions free. Copthorne did manged to take the lead before half time from a super well timed cross from Gabi which found Robin right in front of the goals to but it passed the keeper.
The second half was just as exciting; Lingfield was not going to go quietly and kept coming. We held our ground and worked well as a team. Charlotte did well on the right wing making great runs down the side to create space infield, Zara was also quick to get into position to break down free hits and win the ball back. The girls attacking play was well backed up by solid defending. Keira and Amreet stepped up and closed players down early, making good flat stick tackles to clear the D. Amelie was seldom troubled in goals and only needed to make a couple of unopposed saves. Copthorne’ s second goal once again came from an early cross from Gabi to find Charlotte who played a well-timed sweep shot 1st time to send the ball past the keeper.
With the ball moving up and down quickly, the girls did really well to support each other in both attack and defence, with everyone red in the face by the end of the match.
Well done to all the girls and for Zara for being voted player of the match.
