The boys’ penultimate match of the season saw us welcome the Duke of Kent U11A team to Copthorne this week. Copthorne won the toss and elected to receive and the ball was very soon in Matthew’s hands who ran strongly and eluded several tackles before passing to Ben who crossed for our first try. This was fairly quickly followed by Will breaking through several tackles to score our second. We had a large squad of 12 players for a 9-a-side match so substitutes were running on and off at regular intervals and everyone had their part to play. Nonetheless the boys relaxed a little and lost their defensive structure at this point and allowed the opposition to score two tries to level the match. Adam and Lucas then showed their running skills so that at half-time the score was 4-3. After the break, our defensive organisation improved as did the boys’ willingness to pass the ball which led directly to two tries for Matthew who ran great supporting lines and received well timed passes after breaks from William and Ben. Ronnie finished off the scoring when he escaped down the left before quick thinking by the opposition scrum half allowed them to cross our line for a final score of 8-4. Hamish and Finley showed their pace on several occasions and Rian his strength while Rio was strong as usual at the breakdown. Henri and Thomas put in their usual quota of tackles and the Duke of Kent found William difficult to stop all afternoon, but the Man-of-the-Match must go to Matthew for his efforts both in attack and defence. Well done all!
