The trip to Hazelwood this week produced a barbarian-style festival of running rugby with end-to-end action from beginning to end. We made an inauspicious start when our kick off was caught cleanly by one of the opposition players who then proceeded to run around our defence to score without being touched. After this early wake-up call, our defensive alignment improved although remains an area for improvement. Nonetheless, strong running by Kye produced an early response to make the score 1-1. Charlie took the ball into and through a number of tacklers to score a hatrick soon afterwards, interspersed only by another try from the opposition on account of attempted tackles being too high and thus ineffective.
Freddie was also making good ground every time he got the ball and it was no surprise when he got over the line for our 5th try. Joseph demonstrated good footwork down the left wing and Jonathan showed determination and strength in contact. Our tackling continued to be rather unconvincing in general and this resulted in three more tries for the opposition before we spent several minutes on the Hazelwood line and eventually Alex took the ball forward with real aggression to score our sixth. Nick was also making good progress when he got the ball and he was the next to score to take us one try ahead. The lead continued to change hands and with two minutes left the score was tied at 8-8 which would have been a fitting end but frustratingly our tiring defence allowed another
Hazelwood runner through to score in the corner. Final score Hazelwood 9 – 8 Copthorne!
Man of the Match: Freddie Hawes for leading the team well and making ground every time he got the ball. Well done all!
