We welcomed Lancing Prep to Copthorne on Wednesday this week and there was much discussion beforehand of keeping our shape, working hard in defence and using the width of the pitch. The boys played with the slope in the first half and were very soon in control with good interplay between Charlie and Alex in midfield. They combined down the left early on to cross the ball to Arun who finished well to score the first goal. Rex and Tommy were solid in defence and eager to bring the ball forward whenever possible. A good pass from Rex allowed us to move swiftly up the pitch and Arun again finished well from close range. Arun’s hatrick was secured from further out and was tucked just inside the post to put us 3-0 up at half-time.
Matthew had been fairly untroubled in goal up this point but certainly had more work to do in the second half as defensive lapses in concentration left him rather exposed on several occasions. He could do nothing about either of the goals that followed with the visitors taking full advantage of the slope and thankfully the boys soon realised that they needed to take more care in defence to avoid letting the match slip away. Once both defenders and midfielders refocused on defending our goal when possession as lost, we were able to build again from the back and Alex and Charlie combined again to set Arun free to score his fourth goal. Lancing scored again in the last couple of minutes which kept the match alive until the final whistle. This turned out to be a hard fought win (4-3), though possibly a little harder than it needed to be!
Man of the Match: Arun.
